An important stronghold in the Middle Ages, the fortified town of Coucy-le-Château-Auffrique retains a remarkable built heritage as a reminder of its glorious past. Its 13th-century castle, a listed Historic Monument, imposing ramparts, wall walk and three fortified doors make it a top destination for lovers of architecture and medieval atmospheres.
Coucy Castle stands at the west end of the town, at the top of a rocky spur overlooking the Oise and Ailette valleys. Discover its feudal ruins and beautiful views of the surrounding countryside.
After visiting the fortress, head to the Soissons Door and the Church of St. Saviour. The approach to the church also offers a pretty view of the surrounding countryside. At the foot of the ramparts you can also discover a charming medieval garden, consisting of a kitchen garden, orchard and herb garden.
If you are passing through Coucy-le-Château in July, don't miss "Coucy à la Merveille", a superb medieval and fantastical sound and light show, performed within the castle walls!
