Situated on both sides of the River Nançon, the City of Art and History of Fougères boasts a magnificent architectural heritage.
Very charming, the old town provides a wonderful setting for walkers. First of all, with its feudal castle flanked by towers and ramparts it is a remarkable example of the medieval time.
But also with the Marchix square and its beautiful old timber-framed houses, the romantic walk along the river and its lavoir (communal laundry washing place), the pleasant public garden and its magnificent view of the fortress and the medieval district. A delight for the eyes!
In front of the castle, the Saint-Sulpice church of Flamboyant Gothic style contains old granite altarpieces.
