Bordered with ramparts, the historic centre of Autun is home to a rich architectural heritage. In the heart of the old town, the Saint-Lazare cathedral, surmounted by a Gothic spire, has a remarkable Romanesque tympanum depicting the Last Judgment.
Also of interest during a visit are the narrow medieval streets around the cathedral, the Rolin museum which houses collections of archaeological objects, sculptures and paintings, and the Natural History museum.
The City of Art and History of Autun is also home to remarkable ancient remains, such as the Roman theatre, the biggest theatre of the Gallic Empire; the Saint-André gateway; the Arroux gateway; the Janus temple; the Gallo-Roman remains.
